The National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, DC, recently announced the launch of a new digital exhibit, Preserving Democracy: Law Enforcement in the New Nation, offering visitors an in-depth look at the early history of American law enforcement and its evolution alongside the nation.
Created in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, the online exhibit explores how law enforcement developed from colonial era systems such as sheriffs, constables and night watches into the more organized, professional agencies which emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibit also examines how geography, population growth, westward expansion, political corruption, public safety challenges, and advances in technology shaped the role of law enforcement in communities across the country.
Featuring approximately 75 photographs, prints and artifacts spanning the early 1700s through the 1930s, the exhibit highlights key moments in the development of American law enforcement. Among the items on display are a sheriff’s writ from 1703, the oldest object in the National Law Enforcement Museum’s collection, and an Indian police belt used by Native American law enforcement personnel, complete with a holster, gunpowder flask and bullet tool. A special “Then and Now” section also traces the evolution of law enforcement equipment and technology, comparing historical badges, communication tools and other objects with their modern counterparts.
