How to Reduce Your Wobble Zone

Larry Nichols Because we are humans and not androids, it is difficult for most to hold an object out in front of us and keep it from moving around. When aiming at a target through a firearm’s sighting system, the front sight post, red dot, or crosshairs in the scope tend to move unevenly across the aiming point on the target. This is referred to as “the natural wobble area” or “the wobble zone” and it cannot be completely stopped…

Improving Analysis of “Trace DNA” Evidence

Researchers try a new way to maximize DNA in low yield situations and reduce costs. Sometimes, forensic labs can find ample DNA in the evidence collected at a crime scene. Other times, investigators are not as fortunate. Evidence samples with low amounts of DNA may not yield a profile which investigators can use to match or exclude potential suspects. Researchers have a potential solution: direct Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). This DNA amplification method allows scientists to add a swab or…

Drug-Impaired Driving: The Contribution of Emerging and Undertested Drugs

In 2022, an estimated 13.6 million people drove under the influence of illicit drugs. When investigating impaired driving cases and traffic fatalities, the National Safety Council currently recommends that forensic toxicology labs regularly test blood for 35 of the most common drugs and metabolites found in these cases.  However, limitations can interfere with our understanding of how frequently drug use contributes to impaired driving incidents. To better understand this, NIJ funded researchers from the Center for Forensic Science Research and…

Grounding and Your Justification for It

John G. Peters, Jr., Ph.D.; Darrell L. Ross, Ph.D.; and Michael Brave, Esq. ©2024. A.R.R. The grounding of an individual is an expanding area in civil litigation, expected to persist for many years.
